CARHENGE

A record 86,598 people visited Carhenge in 1986, making it one of Nebraska's most popular attractions.

The remarkable Carhenge (bottom photo) is an automotive representation that cleverly mimics England's Stonehenge (top photo).

Carhenge was built in 1987 near Alliance, Nebraska.  At first, many local residents wanted Carhenge torn down.  Luckily, it was saved by a local group, and today there is a new, positive attitude toward the site.

Engineer Jim Reinders was inspired to build Carhenge after a visit to Stonehenge.  Stonehenge's major ring was probably built around 2000 B.C.  Some people believe the site was used to predict solstice and equinox risings of the sun and moon.

There are parallels between Carhenge and Stonehenge:  both required engineering expertise to build; they are similar in size; and both are very popular with tourists!
